Category intro

What the Transportation category covers

Transportation bonds are the surety programs required to move people, vehicles or freight in a regulated way — required by state DMVs, departments of revenue, DOT / motor-carrier commissions and school-district boards of education. Each obligee publishes its own bond form; ACS files that form directly with the carrier the obligee already accepts.

This category exists because the underwriting pattern is different from a general commercial bond. Dealers get pulled by inventory turn, IFTA operators by fuel-tax history, DMV title-service by dealer-license standing, and School Bus contracts by the district's bid documents and contract dollar value. Rather than force those files under Commercial Bonds, we keep them here so the right underwriter sees them first.

Sub-programs

Transportation bond programs we write

Motor-Vehicle Dealer Bonds

State-DMV-required bonds for new-car, used-car, wholesale, RV, motorcycle, salvage and auction dealers. Filed on the state's exact bond form, in the exact penal sum the DMV's statute calls for.

IFTA / IRP Fuel-Tax Bonds

State-department-of-revenue bonds guaranteeing payment of interstate fuel-tax and IRP registration obligations. Written for new applicants and for carriers re-instating after a fuel-tax delinquency.

DMV Title Service Bonds

Bonds required of title-service agents, tag-and-title businesses and third-party DMV service centers filing title and registration paperwork on behalf of consumers.

DOT / State Transportation Permit Bonds

Oversize / overweight, hazardous-material transport, motor-carrier operating and state-DOT-issued permit bonds. Filed on the exact form the permit division publishes.

Lost Title / Certificate of Ownership Bonds

Two-times-vehicle-value indemnity bonds that let a DMV issue a replacement title when the original is lost or destroyed. Same-day quote on clean files with an appraised value in hand.

Underwriting

What the transportation underwriter looks at

The paperwork pattern is consistent across dealer, IFTA, title-service and DOT permit files: state application, published bond form, credit report on the principal, and — for the larger dealer and school-bus programs — a two-year financial statement. Clean files with a five-year business history and no tax delinquency typically quote same-day.

Where a state or district requires a specific carrier or a specific bond form (New Jersey MVC, New York DMV, California BAR, Texas DMV, Board-of-Ed contracts in NJ / NY / PA), we hold the direct market for it. That means the file goes to the underwriter who already knows the form, not through a portal that might file the wrong version.

Frequently asked questions

Good to Know

Structurally, yes — a school-district student-transportation contract bond is a bid + performance style guarantee. But the obligee, the bond form and the underwriting inputs are all different from a construction performance bond. Segregating it means the file goes straight to a carrier that writes district contracts routinely, instead of being tried through a construction desk that might decline it.

Freight-broker BMC-84 filings sit under our Commercial Bonds category because the obligee is the FMCSA (a federal agency, not a state DMV) and the bond form is a single national filing. The line between "commercial" and "transportation" here is that state DMV/DOT/school-district files run through Transportation; federal FMCSA filings run through Commercial.

Most state MVC / DMV dealer bonds issue same day on a clean credit file. Larger penal-sum programs and wholesale-only dealer licenses occasionally need a financial statement, which pushes the turnaround to two to three business days.

Yes. Post-delinquency IFTA files sit on our specialty desk — send the DOR notice, the amount they've quantified, and the license-holder credit report, and we'll place the re-instatement bond.

Tell us the state, the bond form and the penal sum

Every transportation obligee publishes its own form. Send the state, the type of bond (dealer, IFTA, title service, DOT permit, school bus), and the penal sum required — we'll route the file to the carrier that writes that program routinely.
